RANSOMWARE ATTACKS ONEBLOOD

Ransomware targets Florida-based blood bank. OneBlood (Orlando) that serves more than 350 blood bank chains was attacked by ransomware. | Healthcare Brew

  • OneBlood, which supplies over 80% of the blood used in Florida hospitals and collects around 1 million donations annually, a ransomware event — where hackers break into a company's online network and essentially block access to important files until a ransom is paid, leading to delayed surgeries and critical shortages across more than 250 hospitals🏥.

  • The average cost of a cybersecurity breach exceeds $4 million, with the OneBlood incident (July 29, 2024) exemplifying how such attacks can inflict significant financial damage and disrupt essential healthcare services.

  • To mitigate similar risks, healthcare systems need to strengthen cybersecurity measures, develop backup plans to sustain operations without critical supplies and consider diversifying supply chains to reduce dependency on single-source providers.
