DRONES + HEALTH SERVICES

🫶 FSU and FAMU provided assistance following Helene using drones and mental health initiatives. | Tal Dem

  • Hurricane Helene has impacted tens of thousands of individuals throughout the state, and both Florida State University's drone team and the faculty at Florida A&M University are actively involved in the comprehensive recovery efforts.

  • FSU's drone team from the Center for Disaster Risk Policy was sent to the Big Bend region for urban search and rescue operations, while FAMU faculty provided support to first responders to help them maintain their mental well-being while working in the affected areas. ⛑️

  • After the drones take images of the damage, the team sends them to the State Emergency Operations Center to give a clear view of how bad the impacts were. The information also helps accelerate the process of distributing financial aid to the affected communities.

  • From FAMU, Kellie O’Dare – an assistant professor in the university's Institute of Public Health – has been able to provide mental health services to first responders through her team’s partnership with Florida's State Fire Marshal office.
