🏆 FSU Startups Pitch Big Ideas for Cash Prizes in Shark Tank-Style Competition | FSU News

  • Three FSU-affiliated startups took the stage at the second annual Discovery Challenge, presenting their innovative ideas in a lively, Shark Tank-style competition. By the end of the event, they secured a total of $110,000 in funding to help bring their FSU-developed technologies to life. 💸

  • Kyle Parella from Cypris Therapeutics snagged the top prize of $50,000 and also won the $10,000 crowd favorite award for groundbreaking treatment for glioblastoma, a serious brain tumor. The new therapy could be 60% more effective than current options while being less harmful to healthy brain tissue.

  • Dave Williams from SeaD Consulting took home second place and $25,000 for his project called “RIGHTTest.” This quick genetic test helps identify seafood mislabeling, giving consumers peace of mind with results in just two hours.

  • Qianli Mu from AMRF Technologies was a runner-up and received $25,000 for his pitch on new wideband radio frequency technologies. These advancements could improve communication systems for both everyday use and government applications.

PREDICTION MODELS

🌀 Precip.ai Model Accurately Depicts Hurricane Milton | Government Technology

  • The data team at Precip.ai recently compared the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) Model against actual observations from Hurricane Milton. They found that while the model wasn't spot-on in every detail, it provided a realistic depiction of the storm's overall impact, showing improvements in forecasting technology.

  • During Hurricane Milton, an incredible 2.6 trillion gallons of rain fell over Florida. To put that into perspective, this amount of water could raise the levels of Lakes Michigan and Huron by more than three inches, highlighting the historic rainfall and the potential for severe flooding. 💧

  • The HRRR Model did a commendable job predicting the wind patterns associated with Hurricane Milton. It identified maximum sustained winds reaching up to 120 mph near the coast, which was crucial for targeting key cities in Florida that were affected by the storm.

  • As meteorologists continue to enhance forecasting methods, the suite of NOAA weather models, including the HRRR, is regularly updated for greater accuracy. However, it’s worth noting that the HRRR is set to be retired at the end of this year, making way for newer models that are designed to provide even more precise predictions.

👾 How to Avoid Misinformation and Internet Fraud After Historic Hurricanes | Government Technology

  • Scammers are actively taking advantage of the situation after Hurricanes Helene and Milton, trying to exploit people’s desire to help by pretending to be legitimate charities. It’s important to be cautious of any donation requests you receive, especially if they come through unexpected emails or social media messages.

  • The National Center for Disaster Fraud warns the public about unsolicited requests for financial assistance. Legitimate agencies like FEMA will never ask for your personal financial information over the phone or through text messages. If you receive such a request, it's likely a scam.

  • Before you donate, take the time to verify that the organization is legitimate. Use trusted websites like CharityNavigator.org or Give.org to check the charity’s reputation.

  • Finally, stay informed about the latest news regarding scams that target hurricane victims. During recovery efforts, it’s vital to double-check the sources of any information you come across. Being vigilant can help you support those in need without falling prey to bad actors. 🤓
