| | | ✨ Associate Professor Jenny Root honored with the esteemed Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. | FSU
The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) Award represents the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to exceptional scientists and engineers who are in the early stages of their careers. FSU Associate Professor of Special Education at the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, Jenny Root, has been chosen as one of about 400 scientists and engineers to receive this prestigious award. She is among the 10 recipients chosen by President Joe Biden from the U.S. Department of Education, making her only the third faculty member from FSU to achieve this honor. 🤩 She is specializing in researching teaching strategies aimed at enhancing academic learning for students with autism and intellectual disabilities. She is also an affiliate faculty member at the Florida Center for Reading Research and holds certification as a board-certified behavior analyst. In addition, she mentors aspiring education scientists and collaborates closely with undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. “I am humbled and honored to receive the PECASE award,” Root said. “This recognition validates the importance of research that challenges ableist assumptions and uses evidence-based practices to redefine the norm in mathematics education for students with autism and intellectual disability.”

| 🫶 Tallahassee State College hosted a Human Trafficking Awareness Forum. | TSC
The Human Trafficking Awareness Forum was designed to inform the campus community about the harsh realities of human trafficking and to inspire individuals to take meaningful action against it. The event featured a panel discussion with representatives from the Survive and Thrive Advocacy Center (STAC) and TSC Counseling Center, along with a student survivor. | Tal Dem “I thought to myself, ‘who wants to hear about this awful stuff?’ I assumed that no one would want to know about this, and I didn’t want to mess up someone’s day,” said Lakendra Reeves, a TSC student and human trafficking survivor. “But then, I realized that my story could be a message to help someone else avoid going through what happened to me.” Each panelist shared their personal experiences and insights, offering important viewpoints on the issue of human trafficking. Attendees had the chance to interact with the panelists and pose questions, promoting a greater understanding of this critical subject. Following the panel discussion, there was a screening of the documentary "City of Dreams," which showcases the struggles and successes of those who have survived human trafficking. This movie served as a strong reminder of how crucial it is to stay informed and advocate for change in addressing this worldwide challenge.
💙 If you or someone you know requires help, feel free to reach out to the STAC. You can contact them by phone or text at (850) 597-2080, or send an email to STAC@surviveandthriveadvocacy.org. |
