| | | | | π°π§ Critics of fluoride in Florida warn about its health risks, but a special analysis shows that not adding fluoride to water can also be harmful. | Orlando Sentinel Why stop fluoride? This year, more than a dozen smaller Florida cities, including Winter Haven, Tavares, Longwood, and Leesburg, have voted to remove fluoride from their water. Led by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, the movement against water fluoridation grows as cities reverse decades of practice, citing health risks outweighing the benefits for tooth decay prevention. π¦· | Florida Health Why add fluoride? "If you don't add fluoride, you will see a definite increase in the number of cavities, especially in low-income areas where it's more difficult to see a dentist and get fluoride treatments," said Jeff Ottley, president of the Florida Dental Association and a family dentist in Milton. π©π»ββοΈ "Adding optimal amounts of fluoride into our community water supplies can prevent at least 25% of tooth decay in children and adults, reducing the need for costly dental treatments," the association stated after Surgeon General Ladapo labeled fluoridation "public health malpractice" in a November press conference.βοΈ Ashley Malin, assistant professor at the University of Florida, has studied fluoride's health impacts since 2013. Her research links higher fluoride levels in pregnant women to an increased likelihood of neurobehavioral issues, like anxiety, depression, and autism symptoms, in their children at age 3.

| | ENVIRONMENT SPRING ALLERGIES |
| | | π³π Spring in Tallahassee brings blooming azaleas, chirping birds, and a yellow haze of pollen covering paths, benches, and even Lake Ella. If your sinuses flare up, it's the trees you can thank. | Tal Dem Tree pollen is everywhere in spring, causing sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. While flowering trees like magnolias rely on insects and have heavier pollen, wind-pollinated trees release lightweight pollen that travels far into your sinuses. Weather affects pollen levels: wind spreads it, while rain reduces it, and a mild winter can extend allergy season.
π²Which trees trigger allergies most in Tallahassee? Here are the top offenders, ranked on the Ogren Plant-Allergy Scale (OPALS) from 1 (least) to 10 (most allergenic). |
