The film by local filmmakers Chucha Barber and Josh McLawhorn sheds light on environmental issues affecting Florida’s wild oyster reefs and the urgent need to restore them. It also highlights the state’s decision to reopen the Apalachicola oyster beds, which had been closed since 2020. Oysters were essential to coastal ecosystems, acting as "silent protectors" of water. However, over the past three decades, 90% of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed due to pollution, overharvesting, and reduced freshwater flow. The film has achieved acclaim at more than 30 film festivals worldwide, winning 11 prestigious awards, including multiple “Best Documentary” honors in the U.S. and abroad, as well as a Suncoast Regional EMMY Award. ✨
