HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY

DataTALKS is a series of discussions that aim to provide insight into the economic trends of Tallahassee-Leon County through recorded economic data. By sharing detailed data and analysis, the community can better grasp the opportunities and challenges within this sector. 📊 | OEV

Health Care and Social Services accounted for about 9% of Tallahassee’s Gross Regional Product in 2022 ($2.04B), ranking third after Government ($5.07B) and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services ($2.41B). Major health care components include Ambulatory Health Care Services (4.5%) Hospitals (2.8%), and Nursing and Residential Care Facilities (0.7%).
Leon County is consistently among the top quartile of 67 counties statewide in physicians per capita. The Tallahassee metro area has 1,309 Health Care (Target Industry) establishments as of 2022.
These establishments have 26,444 jobs as of 2024, with General Medical and Surgical Hospitals accounting for 28% of jobs. Health Care Target Industry employment is projected to grow 8% by 2029.

GRANT FOR HOMEOWNERS

Florida has opened its doors for the hurricane hardening grant once again. Find out how to apply. 🔍 | Axios

Hurricanes are nature's largest and costliest storms. The My Safe Florida Home program offers residents the means to safeguard their homes — which can, in turn, lower their insurance bills.
The program staggers its application process to prioritize those who need it most. Low-income homeowners can apply July 16 to July 30.
Those with what the state deems as "moderate-income" can put in for the program afterward, with seniors up first from July 31 to August 14. The portal closes after all funds are exhausted.
They can submit a grant application once the inspection is reviewed and processed. If approved, the program offers $2 in grant funds for every $1 the homeowner spends on construction. You can apply here.

PARIS OLYMPICS

From Florida State to Team USA: Florida State is proud to announce all of their athletes going to the Olympics in Paris, France. 🥇 | Seminoles via IG

Jeremiah Davis qualified for his first Olympics after winning gold in the long jump at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials on June 24, with a career best mark of 8.20m (26-11) on his final attempt. Davis became the first American in FSU history to compete in the long jump at the Olympics.
Casey Krueger has been selected for a second straight Olympic Games to represent the four-time gold medalists and has 49 caps for her country dating back to 2016.
Jenna Nighswonger played four seasons at Florida State with 86 appearances and 56 starts, scoring 19 goals and 34 assists for 74 points as a midfielder. She has been selected for her first Olympics and her first major international competition after just nine caps.
Three Noles will join Team USA and will begin their Olympic journey on July 25 against Zambia at 3 p.m. ET.
