| How Red Lobster’s phenomenal rise turned into a sinking ship. 🦞 In 2014 and 2019, Red Lobster's annual sales were approximately $2.5 billion. This is the highest ever sales for a seafood chain but not until 2020. | Restaurant Business Red Lobster, founded by Bill Darden in Lakeland, Florida, in 1968, began as a single-family-owned restaurant. In the 1970s, Red Lobster was acquired by General Mills, a US-based food company and they became an independent company in 2014 with a total of 670 locations as of 2021. The Red Lobster breakthrough started in 1974 when they introduced popcorn shrimp.🍿🍤Lobsterfest launched in ‘84 and their famous Cheddar Bay Biscuits was added in ‘92. One of the blockbuster breakthroughs was an all-you-can-eat snow crab for $22.99 in summer 2003. 🦀 However, this “breakthrough” became one of the biggest “marketing blunders,” causing the downfall of the full-service seafood chain. It led to a $3.3 million loss and significant stock losses for Darden Restaurants and the ousting of CEO Edna Morris. A revolving door of CEOs ensued while frustrations grew for minority-owner Thai Union Group. They tried to recover by introducing a new deal in June 2023: All you can eat Shrimp for $20. Unfortunately, This "Ultimate Endless Shrimp” incurred more than $11 million loss, leading them to bankruptcy. 📉 A new owner, RL Purchaser LLC, came to acquire what was left of the seafood chain. | Learn more
