| | | | | 🤩 Tallahassee ranks in the top 15 U.S. cities for Black-owned businesses. | OEV The U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 Annual Business Survey (ABS), released in December 2024, reveals that the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) ranks #14 nationally for the highest percentage of Black-owned businesses. 👏 As of 2022, 3.3% of businesses were Black-owned, up from 2.7% in 2021 and 2.4% in 2020 and 2019. The survey identified around 7,828 employer firms in the Tallahassee MSA, with 549 of them (7%) are Black-owned, doubling the national average. | LendingTree Darryl Jones, who oversees programs for minority, women, and small businesses at Leon County’s Office of Economic Vitality, emphasized that the community offers a wealth of resources to support business growth. While progress is still being made, the OEV is pleased to see local Black-owned business numbers moving in the right direction. “Resource partners like the FAMU Small Business Development Center, Domi Station, Jim Moran Institute,” Jones said. “And then you have lending partners like the FAMU Federal Credit Union and the Smart Steps Loan Program.” | Black Enterprise

| | IN THE SPOTLIGHT LCS LEADERS |
| | | 🥳 Two Leon County principals have been honored with the Florida TaxWatch leadership award. | Tallahassee Democrat Florida TaxWatch (FTW) works to improve the productivity and accountability of Florida government. Its research recommends productivity enhancements and explains the statewide impact of fiscal and economic policies and practices on taxpayers and businesses. FTW established the Principal Leadership Awards (PLA) program in 2013 to identify Florida’s most effective principals in high-risk K-12 public schools, recognize and reward their work, and promote their transformational practices throughout the state. 🌟 Among the 15 recipients are Carmen Conner from Pineview Elementary and Benny Bolden, who previously worked at Nims Middle School, both honored for their roles in guiding their schools to achieve academic excellence. Bolden led Nims to its first B grade in the school's 66-year history in 2024 before advancing to a district administration role in November. Conner pushed Pineview Elementary from a B to an A in its 2024 school grade. "Principals are the backbone of Florida's schools," Jeff Kottkamp, FTW's executive vice president said in a news release announcing the winners. "As leaders in their schools they support and motivate hardworking teachers and ensure students of all ages are provided ample opportunities to succeed."
