| | | | | 🔎🧭 Discovery of Florida: A Splash of History. On March 27, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, then Governor of Puerto Rico, embarked on an expedition seeking the legendary island of Bimini. Instead, he stumbled upon the eastern coast of what is now Florida. This serendipitous discovery occurred on Easter Sunday, a date that influenced his naming of the region "La Florida," meaning "feast of flowers" in Spanish to reflect its lush landscape and its discovery during Easter. This event paved the way for Spanish exploration and colonization. | City of St. Augustine Ponce de León's fleet, consisting of 3 ships and approximately 200 men, set sail from Puerto Rico on March 4, 1513. After a journey marked by storms and navigational challenges, they first sighted land on March 27. Initially mistaking the land for an island, they continued northward along the coast. On April 2, they landed near present-day Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. 🏝️ | My Florida History
